The suggestion that Mike Vick shouldn't be able to play football is ridiculous, it's not a surprise though. We live in a great country, but it's a country where people feel like excons are throwaways. Vick is no different. Despite time served, too many people feel like excons should pay for their crimes forever.

There's no reason that Vick should be expected to go on a media blitz apologizing over and over, or pander to animal lovers around the country because he made mistakes. I LOVE dogs, but I don't really care if Vick is remorseful. He did his time. If he's remorseful that's great. If he's not, he doesn't have to be. I hope that Vick is truly rehabilitated, but I'd also be happy if he just doesn't kill another dog.

We all know that our prison system doesn't do a good job at rehabilitation. We warehouse. If a criminal does their time, gets out, and doesn't commit the same crime again, I'm happy. At the very least, I think that Vick learned that it's not a good idea to kill dogs. His level of remorse has nothing to do with his abilities or his prospects for employment. As long as he's not killing dogs he should be able to run around and throw a ball if someone is willing to pay him. And I think someone should give him the opportunity.

The vast majority of people in prison will get out at some point. If they can't earn a living, what do you think they'll be doing eventually? For me, Vick's situation is a great example of how America generally treats excons. We expect them to do thier time and then respond favorably when we continue to punish them after they get out. Prospects for the future are good motivation for change. Hopelessness is not.
